Environmental science is at the forefront of modern day science and policy. It is a global issue which is applicable to multiple aspects of everyday life, including climate change, sustainability and resource management, agriculture, health and the economy. The interdisciplinary nature of this field requires international collaboration on research and data sharing, and an accessible publishing environment to make this research and data accessible to those who need it.
BioMed Central and SpringerOpen have pioneered the open access publishing model, collectively making academic research and data, both within science and social science, freely and widely accessible for over 15 years. During that time they have built up an array of interdisciplinary journals in environmental sciences, which continue to push the boundaries of single subject science and provide integrative and complete solutions to some of the key environmental problems that face modern society.
Here I mention some of the journals in our ever-growing portfolio of environmental science journals, with details of the contemporary challenges they address. You can sign up to article alerts for each journal through the website links at the bottom of each journal description, or follow @OpenEnviron on Twitter for regular updates on the latest, open access, environmental research.

Carbon Balance and Management
Carbon Balance and Management is dedicated to disseminating original research related to the understanding of the global carbon cycle, as well as methodologies for its measurement and analysis and reviews of topics within the field. This includes studies of spatial and temporal distributions of carbon pools and fluxes, control and feedback mechanisms of the carbon-climate system and points of intervention for managing the carbon-climate-human system. The journal supports the work of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) by providing governmental and non-governmental organizations with instantaneous access to contemporary knowledge, including paradigm shifts and consensual views.
City, Territory and Architecture
City, Territory and Architecture opens an interdisciplinary debate on the relational nature of projects for spaces where people settle and interrelate. The journal shares theoretical and applied scientific knowledge and positions with primary goal of exploring conceptual and physical relations between city, territory and architecture. The central theme of the journal is the adaptation to new urban situations: new forms of inhabiting space are arising in the contemporary city; both human settlement and project development and implementation are characterized by a stronger awareness of and care for the entire territory, as well as an awareness of environmental values.
Climate Change Responses
Climate Change Responses includes research on ecological and evolutionary responses to climate change, especially ground-breaking work linking responses to environmental change across levels of biological organization, from individuals to ecosystems, and with an emphasis on species interactions. This research aims to establish cause-and-effect relationships rather than basic correlations between changes in the environment and species responses. The topics covered by this journal include but are not limited to: behavior, ecosystem function and dynamics, evolutionary adaptation and plasticity, paleoecology, phenology, physiology, population dynamics, and broad ecological changes, all within the context of climate change.
The focus of Ecological Processes is on ecological studies with an emphasis on the underlying processes responsible for the dynamics and functions of ecological systems at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The scope of this publication is aligned towards techniques, approaches, concepts, models and applied research in ecology, which advance our knowledge and capability of ecosystem sustainability and environmental balance. The journal also highlights the integration of ecological and socio-economic processes to further this goal. Ecological Processes is affiliated with the Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Energy, Sustainability and Society
Partnered with scientists from the Helmholtz Association and the European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance, Energy, Sustainability and Society offers a forum for discourse on systemic challenges at the intersection of energy, sustainability and society for natural scientists, engineers, social and political scientists and industry experts. It is the particular aim of this journal to publish inter‐ and cross‐disciplinary papers that provide a substantial contribution to the holistic innovation of sustainable energy systems. The scope of the journal encompasses the whole innovation process, ranging from scientific research to both innovative approaches for technology implementation and the analysis of economic, social and environmental impacts of sustainable energy systems. The journal strives to publish early scientific opinions on issues, which are just emerging and require crosscutting and creative thinking.
Environmental Evidence facilitates rapid publication of evidence syntheses, in the form of CEE-registered Systematic Reviews and Maps. It focuses on the effectiveness of environmental management interventions and the impact of human activities on the environment. The scope covers all forms of environmental management and human impacts and therefore spans the natural and social sciences.
Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine
The official journal of the Japanese Society for Hygiene, Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine (EHPM) brings a comprehensive approach to prevention and environmental health related to medical, biological, molecular biological, genetic, physical, psychosocial, chemical, and other environmental factors. EHPM features definitive studies on human health sciences, including regular articles, short communications, and review articles. It provides comprehensive and unique information to a worldwide readership.
Environmental Sciences Europe
Environmental Sciences Europe is an international forum showcasing novel research and technological advances pertaining to all facets of environmental science. In addition, the journal provides a forum for policy articles, reviews and commentaries on issues relating to this broad field. Through the publication of these articles, Environmental Sciences Europe helps to improve the comprehension of issues between environmental sciences and regulation.
Environmental Systems Research
Environmental Systems Research publishes innovative research on environmental systems science and environmental management. Through original research articles, reviews of the field and comments on specific topics, the journal aims to enhance the integration of environmental systems analysis to help develop management solutions that are consensus-oriented, risk-informed, scientifically-based and cost-effective. Environmental Systems Research is associated with the International Society for Environmental Information Sciences (ISEIS).
Forest Ecosystems publishes scientific communications from any discipline that can provide interesting contributions about the structure and dynamics of natural and domesticated forest ecosystems, and their services to people. The journal welcomes innovative science as well as application oriented work that will enhance understanding of woody plant communities. Forest Ecosystems is affiliated with Beijing Forestry University.
