SpringerOpen’s Roadmap in Asia—an insight into open access research in Asia

Our special campaign dedicates itself to looking into SpringerOpen’s open access journey across Asia. We highlight successes, open access partnerships and feature a few of the subject areas driving the region’s growth.

The global open access movement has grown significantly throughout the years, impacting the way scientific research is being published and discovered. There is still an immense potential reach for open approach and it is growing particularly rapidly in Asia*.

Open Access Research in Asia

SpringerOpen works with the region’s leading societies and institutions to publish top-quality research.

SpringerOpen, one of the three product areas of SpringerNature’s Open Research Group (ORG) offers researchers a place to publish fully open access in its portfolio of over 200 journals across all scientific disciplines, including engineering, mathematics, medicine, the humanities and social sciences.

Since the launch of SpringerOpen in 2010, our research output saw a significant increase emerging from Asia. More than 6,000 submissions and 4,000 papers have been published—a huge year-on-year growth.

To date, 2015 saw the strongest output from the region.

SpringerOpen’s Partnerships in Asia

We are working with the region’s leading societies and institutions to publish top-quality research.

Almost 30 Asian partnerships have been formed with SpringerOpen. Some of our key affiliations include: A*Star, The Korean Association for Science Education (KASE) and The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME).

For example, Earth, Planets and Space (EPS), is published in affiliation with societies from Japan—The Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Science, The Seismological Society of Japan, The Volcanological Society of Japan, The Geodetic Society of Japan and The Japanese Society for Planetary Sciences.

The Bioinformatics Institute from A*Star in Singapore is affiliated to SpringerOpen’s publication of Scientific Phone Apps and Mobile Devices.

The involvement of Editorial Board Members from Asia is also vital to the success of our portfolio. Camencita D. Padilla from University of the Philippines, Ucok Siregar from University of Indonesia and Satit Saejung from Khon Kaen University to name a few have played key roles in supporting our journals.

With over 700 Editorial Board Members from Asia lending their expertise and commitment, we are confident partnerships in this region will continue to develop even further.
