Author Profile

Stephen Coombes

I am a Professor of Applied Mathematics in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Nottingham. My research interests lie in the area of mathematical biology and in particular the application of principles from nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics to the study of neural systems. I am co-editor in chief of the new Open Access Journal of Mathematical Neuroscience - www.mathematical-neuroscience.com.

I am currently the coordinator of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network: NETT - Neural Engineering Transformative Technologies - http://www.neural-engineering.eu/. Neural Engineering is an inherently new discipline that coalesces engineering, physics and neuroscience for the design and development of brain-computer interface systems, cognitive computers and neural prosthetics. For the implementation of future transformative technologies a new breed of young researchers must be trained to integrate ideas and skills from a broad range of disciplines.
